The Authority kicks things up a notch, as sides have been drawn and evil is loose in Portland. Magic on the Hunt has so many culminations and epic events it'll be hard to compress it all into one review, but let's see what we can do about that. From an all-out battle in Maeve's Inn to an all-out war between Soul Complements to yet even more gunshots being fired, this book has everything and more.

This book is action packed with plot progression and great scenes. My favorites were Allie bringing the Pack into the hunt for Grayson, Mikhail, and every other baddie out there at the moment. The Pack may not be able to channel ridiculous spells that the public doesn't even know about, but they are magic using PIs. They know how to survive, with or without combat advantages.
And we finally see the various Soul Complements all brought together, and they all get beat up by the end. It's hard to tell if killing any of them, like Mikhail or Sedra, is even effective. What is death to the undead? I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series, Magic on the Line, to see how they deal with the fallout of all the battles. Not to mention the political implications of having lost so many Authority members, either to death, dissention, or being Closed.
And this book may have my favorite scene of the series so far, culminating in the one liner of "You've been out Jenga'd by a rock." That scene made my day when reading it the first time round. You'll just have to buy the book and read it to understand why. (Mwuahahaha.)
Allie continues to learn bits and pieces of the whole story going on. Well, stories I should say. There's the whole Soul Companions = undead insanity story. There's the whole Daniel Beckstrom Enterprises effectively growing portable Wells with no restraints story. And then there's the Daniel Beckstrom's history in the Authority and how it effects Allie story. Weave those all together with the Pack subplot and you've got one full book. That's right, the Pack continues to slowly integrate itself into the Authority's goings on. Even if it's a search and identify job to find all the big baddies wandering around Portland.
The magical prison and the resulting consequences really helped merge several of these story lines together. Azkaban has nothing on the Authority's prison. And these magical prisoners seem to be a lot more creative in their destructive abilities. That creates all sorts of tension while reading each scene unfolding.
If you're still reading the series, then you definitely want to check out this installment. It was hard to put down, and I may have read it in two sittings. That's how entertaining it was. And as the next book in the series comes out later this month, you won't have to worry about waiting forever to find out what happens after this.
I'm still waiting for Magic on the Line to come out in stores so I can snag a copy of my very own. But until then, I could always re-read some of the series to refresh my memory of all the goings on so far. And there have been so many goings on in just these six books already. |
